Freedom School Express

Registration for FSX for the 2026-2027 school year starts in mid-September 2026 through the SPPS Office of Alternative Education's Extended Day for Learning (EDL) Program.
Freedom School Express (FSX) program provides free, comprehensive, culturally relevant summer and afterschool enrichment to children in high-poverty areas. The program helps children fall in love with reading, increases their self-esteem, generates more positive attitudes toward learning, and connects their families with needed resources in the community. This program is proven to curb summer learning loss and help close the opportunity gap.
FSX is held immediately afterschool for two hours, two days a week (days vary by site), and scholars are offered a snack/light meal. Afterschool programs begin in October. Locations include Benjamin E. Mays (2:00-3:45 pm), Capitol Hill (4:00-6:00 pm), and Hazel Park (3:00-5:00 pm). Transportation is not currently available. Families must arrange their own transportation.
